Yaqut, Jamal al-Din

Yaqut, Jamal al-Din
(?-1240)
A slave military officer of Abyssinian origin who already enjoyed a considerable position by the time Raziya (1236-1240) ascended the throne. Impressed by Yaqut's ability, Raziya promoted him to the position of amir-i akhur and also entitled him amir al-umara (chief amir). This was resented by senior slave officers, in particular by Ikhtiyar al-Din Aitegin, who, jointly with Altunia, the governor of Tabarhind, started a revolt while Raziya was campaigning against the rebellious governor of Lahore. The rebels seized Yaqut and put him to death in 1240.
